Informational Writing:
Communicating effectively is a business and life skill. In order to communicate effectively, it is important for an individual to be well informed on subject matter. The next process for our 20 Time project is to write and informational piece. Students study the various types of informational writing:
1. Defining a subject area and providing examples of that topic
2. Compare and Contrast
3. Cause and Effect
4. Explain something to a reader that they may not know or understand
5. Present the latest research information
6. Teach the reader how to solve a problem or apply knowledge
They then will select the format of their writing that best fits their needs. If they are learning more about aerospace engineering, they may research what the collegiate programs and expectations, career opportunities, etc... If they are identifying the types of careers that would interest them, perhaps a compare and contrast essay would work best.
These papers will inform others on the topic and will be placed in a writing portfolio for the student. This MLA formal writing will be a process writing opportunity during which each child will receive specific feedback on their writing process based on brainstorming, planning, and rough drafts. Some final papers may be used as part of the community outreach component, by serving to inform others in our classroom, school, and community of the researched information about a particular student-selected topic as it pertains to that student's identified passion.
