What is 20 Time?
The History of 20-Time: 3M started it in the 1950's with their 15% Project. The result? Post-its and masking tape. Google is credited for making the 20% Project what it is today. Google asks its employees to spend 20% of their time at Google to work on a pet project...a project that their job description doesn't cover. As a result of the 20% Project at Google, we now have Gmail, AdSense, Google News, and my favorite, the Google Teacher Academy. Using 20 Time in the workplace allows innovative ideas and projects to flourish and/or fail without the bureaucracy of committees and budgets.

Application to Honors English I- Fall 2013
There are 59 students enrolled in my Honors English I classes this semester. These students, on any given day, seemed bored with any concept from the curriculum. This is not the type of classroom environment I have ever wanted. Each class began in a similar way, I would take the stage and try to engage my students with jokes, anecdotes, connections and enthusiasm. While these acts were engaging to few, most just sank deeper into daydreams.
The curriculum was rewritten two years ago to align with the Common Core Standards. There was a redesign of all the units for English I. We decided on the over-arching theme of The Human Experience with correlating unit themes of Revenge and Regret, Perception, Passion, Journey of the Hero, and Honor. My students were just beginning the Passion unit, studying "Romeo and Juliet" and moving into "Macbeth." It was at this time that I began researching new educational trends that might help motivate my students. This is when I stumbled across the 20 Time in Education website.
